I spent yesterday evening with Leone, ostensibly to help him with his homework but it turned out to be just a series of annoyances, he is totally uncooperative, annoying, arrogant, obsessed with being #1, with his grades, with winning.
He has no interest in anything but himself. Certainly he is not interested in what I have to say. He always wants to be my favorite grandchild. Hahah.

I told him and Theo some stories about my sister Roberta and how it seemed that everyone liked her better because she was young and cute, and I wonder, was I that arrogant as Leone when I was a kid and was that why no one liked me?
I told them about the time when my garden club were to enter fruit and vegetable arrangements in the Dutchess County Fair. I made a beautiful princess with cabbage leaves for skirts and corn silk for hair. Roberta, although too young to belong to the garden club, made a doll of an apple with some marshmallows stuck on for head, arms, and legs. She won first prize and I got an Honorable Mention. It was not so much that I wanted the first prize
Sam said onetime that I have lots of admirers but no friends. Then I was thinking how when I was a kid there were no other kids around so I had no friends so I had imaginary playmates, Lenny was invisible and there were the snakes, and the little cast iron jockey over on the Winner's terrace.
That was who I had to play with and talk to all the time.
